– Barbara Jacobs & Co

There’s no doubt that a steady and experienced hand to guide you through the process of buying and selling residential property is of huge benefit in terms of time, cost and frayed nerves, especially in the current climate. Wouldn’t it be great to know who to call on? Someone who’s got the know-how and the ‘can do’ attitude to be on your side, no matter what? If that is something that appeals to you, April’s CGA Client of the Month, Barbara Jacobs of Barbara Jacobs & Co is the woman for you!

“Having practised for the last twenty-eight years as a solicitor in two prestigious York based law firms I started my own practice, Barbara Jacobs & Co, in October 2008. Based at Westfield House, just off York’s outer ring road, I offer a fixed fee, highly efficient legal service for all transactions relating to residential property for clients own occupation or for buy to let investments. Whilst arguably not an ideal time to launch a business ( let alone in property) given the current financial downturn, as I hoped my proactive and pragmatic approach has been widely welcomed; former clients and property professionals, such as estate agents, financial advisers and accountants all appreciating my total commitment and tenacity in achieving completed transactions in difficult trading conditions.

I have found starting my own business has been great fun, but a lot of hard work dealing with the numerous statutory and other requirements, which could not easily have been achieved without the Internet and the support of two other fantastic lawyers Jane Sachedina and Neil Lieberman. Jane and Neil also run their own law practices from Westfield House and together we form a chamber of solicitors (akin to a chamber of barristers). Their support and guidance combined with Jane’s recommended accountants, the wonderful team at CGA, have all been invaluable!

Interestingly, the single most important aspect of starting my business for me has been the marketing. I knew it was crucial to ensure that as many of my former clients and professional contacts as possible knew about my practice and I count myself very fortunate to be working with Ned Hoste and Jacky Fitt of the Big Ideas Collective who devised an innovative and quirky set of four promotional postcards. These cards were released to friends, relatives and property professionals over several months, letting them know where I am, what I’m up to and bringing a sense of humour to the doom and gloom atmosphere of the property industry in late 2008.

Two of my postcard images are currently popping up in newspaper, magazine and brochure advertising and to date the whole campaign has proved so successful that within my first six months I am already acting for 50 clients. So, feeling well placed and looking forward to the inevitable signs of an upturn in the property market, which, just like the green shoots of spring, are emerging, I’m looking forward to helping many more clients achieve their property ambitions in 2009.

So, if you would like any advice on residential property transactions don’t hesitate to get in touch!”
